This summer 2022 our holiday took us to a Tesla road trip in Europe. Our Tesla is the model 3 standard range plus. Tesla says that the maximum range for the model 3Sr+ is 320km, but the range is actually quite a lot less. Good thing is that the Tesla Supercharger network is already quite good in Europe and the charging doesn´t take much time on the Superchargers. We were quite confident that the range would be enough to do a road trip. Most of the charging’s we did in the Superchargers, but we also used the plugins in the camping sites for an over night charging’s.

Our route and how we planned it

Our first idea for the summer holiday was to go to southern Norway, also by our own car, but because we visited Norway on the last two summer holidays we decided to do a change in the plans. This last minute change in the route didn´t leave me much time for planning.

On our trips I´m the person doing all the bookings and reservations, checking which sightseeing we go visit, where to eat etc. Also I cook if we have a kitchen available and I do most off the packing. My husband drives and also help me with the other stuff.

The only things I booked in advance before our departure was the ferry tickets from Helsinki to Stockholm and other ferry from Ystad to Sassnitz, our first night accommodation in Kristianstad (from Airbnb). Also I found a great Sunday offer to the Legoland Billund, a cabin in their camping site and one day entrance to the Legoland for 240€ for two adults and two children, so I booked that in advance as well.

One place that I set as a destination to our way was the famous Neuschwanstein castle in Germany. Somehow I always wanted to visit that castle but I never had the chance before.

For the rest of the journey I did the planning on the way as we were travelling. Because we were travelling with our Tesla 3Sl+ we were very much depending on the Superchargers on the way. I used the ABRB (a better route planner) app to see the charging stations. The app was easy to use and I would recommend to install it if you are doing a similar trip.

Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany is a very popular tourist destination.

Our route went from:

  • Helsinki (Finland) – Stockholm (Sweden) by a ship overnight
  • Stockholm – Kristianstad (Sweden)
  • Kristianstad – Ystad (Sweden) and from there a ferry to Sassnitz (Germany)
  • Sassnitz – Potsdam (Germany)
  • Potsdam – Leipzig (Germany)
  • Leipzig – Nuremberg (Germany)
  • Nuremberg – Neuchwanstein castle (Germany) – Haiming (Austria)
  • Haiming – Feldkirch (Austria)
  • Feldkirch – Vaduz (Liechtenstein) – Vitznau (Switzerland)
  • Vitznau – Bern (Switzerland)
  • Bern – Strasbourg (France)
  • Strasborg – Saverne (France)
  • Saverne – Luxembourg (Luxembourg)
  • Luxembourg – Brussels (Belgium)
  • Brussels – Amsterdam (Holland)
  • Amsterdam – Ommen (Holland)
  • Ommen – Hamburg (Germany)
  • Hamburg – Aabenraa (Denmark)
  • Aabenraa – Lego Land (Denmark)
  • Lego Land – Copenhagen (Denmark)
  • Copenhagen – Vadstena (Sweden)
  • Vadstena – Helsinki (Finland)

In total we did just driving about 5700km. We split the days so that we left in the morning after breakfast and then drove few hours to the next destination. In the afternoon we had time to look around the places and do some sightseeing. During the driving I normally looked for our next day destination and searched for a place for the night.

Tesla Supercharger in Austria.

Packing the Tesla

Tesla model 3 is quite spacious car even outside it doesn´t look very big. We had a bit too much clothes. The weather was great during the trip but I took just in case rain clothes and some extra warm clothes as well, which we didn´t need. We also stayed many nights at a camping sites and it would of been possible to do laundry in those places.

Our kids wanted to take many toys, which stayed almost all of the trip in the bags. If we do the same trip some day again I will say maybe two toys per child is sufficient.

The biggest items in the car were tent, sleeping bags, sheets, pillows and towels which were all needed. Kitchen items we didn´t bring and all of the cabins we rented had the basic dishes, kettles and pans. Most of the times we ate in restaurants.

We changed the destination every day so we needed to plan really well every day how we organized our things inside the car.

Packing the car was like a huge jigsaw puzzle…

Part two of our Tesla road trip in Europe coming soon! I will do another post about our Tesla road trip to Europe where I will give more information about our budget and the places we visited.
